What's your grind?

Understanding your coffee grind size is crucial for optimizing your brew. As grinders age or get heavy use, they can lose calibration, leading to inconsistent extraction and flavor. This analyzer tool helps you easily measure your actual grind distribution.

To use: Hold your smartphone camera flatly over the grounds, not at an angle. Take a photo of coffee grounds scattered on a white background such as a sheet of paper (avoid clumping or overlapping grounds). The grounds should be sparse with no overlap. A few dozen grounds is plenty! For accurate scaling, include a US coin (penny, nickel, dime, or quarter) in the photo. You will be prompted to draw a circle around the coin for scale. Then select a rectangular area containing your grounds (do not include the coin or other noise). The thresholding dial can be used to modulate the sensitivity to things like shadows or faint grounds. The tool will detect grounds from powder (0.1mm) to coarse chunks (1mm), giving you data about the grinder and potential grind size adjustments.
